Safety also means creating an environment where students feel seen, valued, and connected to trusted adults. When challenges arise, schools should work with families and appropriate support services to identify needs early and help students succeed.
Matt believes safety, belonging, and trust are part of the foundation for academic success. When students feel secure and supported, they are better able to focus, learn, and grow.
PRIORITIES FOR SANTEE SCHOOLS
Strong Academics and Preparation for the Future
Students need strong fundamentals in reading, writing, math, critical thinking, communication, and personal responsibility. Matt believes Santee schools should build on that foundation while preparing students for high school, higher education, the workforce, public service, and life.
Students learn in different ways and at different rates. Strong instruction gives educators the flexibility and resources to help students engage with important material while maintaining clear expectations for learning.
That preparation also includes responsible use of technology and artificial intelligence. Students should learn to use modern tools ethically and effectively, without allowing technology to replace reading, writing, reasoning, creativity, or personal effort. Teachers should have the guidance and support they need to make technology an asset in the classroom.
Listening to Teachers, Staff, and Families
The people closest to students often understand the challenges best. Matt believes the board should actively listen to teachers, classified staff, administrators, parents, and students before making major decisions.
Good policy starts with good listening. Matt will prioritize transparency, respectful communication, and practical decision-making that reflects the needs of Santee schools.
That also means ensuring educators have the tools, training, time, and resources they need to do their jobs effectively and support students with different strengths and needs.
Responsible Stewardship of Public Resources
Taxpayers deserve accountability, transparency, and careful use of public funds. Matt will approach district spending with the same practical framework he has used throughout his career: define the requirement, understand the risk, prioritize the mission, and measure results.
School funding decisions should focus on student learning and safety, supporting teachers and staff, maintaining facilities, and protecting the district’s long-term ability to serve Santee families.
Resources should be directed where they can effectively support students, educators, campuses, and the district’s core educational mission.
